Ah, the rainy days are here and it’s time to enjoy those hot, steaming
bowl of soups with the usual lunch menus at home.

One of our favorites is almondigas (patola and miswa soup with meatballs). This is a simple soup dish that’s perfect any time – rainy day or not.

Here’s the recipe.

* meatballs:
1/4 kg ground pork
5 tbsp flour
1 egg beaten
salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup oil for frying

* soup:
3 cloves garlic minced
1 med onion finely chopped
3-4 cups water
1 pork bouillon cube
1-2 packs/pcs. miswa (if you buy from your neighborhood sari-sari store, they retail miswa per pc/pack)
1 patola (sponge gourd), peeled and sliced (1/2 inch thick)
3 tbsp. chopped chives
salt and pepper to taste
1 tbsp. oil for sautéing

(1) Mix ground pork, flour, egg, salt and pepper in a bowl. Add more flour if
needed in order to properly form the meatballs.
(2) Fry the meatballs in hot oil, then set aside.
(3) In a soup pot, sauté garlic and onions for about a minute.
(4) Add the bouillon cube to melt and cook in the hot oil.
(5) Add water and bring it to a boil.
(6) Add in the sliced gourd (patola) and chopped chives and cook until
(7) Add the fried meatballs and miswa. Cook just until the miswa has
softened – about a minute in the boiling broth.

Serve piping hot.
